Brief history of RCD Espanyol (more on next page):
RCD Espanyol is one of the eight founder member clubs of the Spanish Football League (otherwise known as "La Liga"). It was founded on October 28th 1900 by Catalan and Spanish engineering students (from the University of Barcelona) at a time when the game in Spain was dominated by both foreign players and foreign club owners. The Club has consistently played in the top flight, with the exception of four individual seasons of second-tier football, the last time was during the 93/94 season. This consistent top flight status is nowhere short of a miracle given the fact that we share the City with a much bigger neighbour with much, much less support from the local community.
Despite this, RCD Espanyol has won four national domestic cups - "Copas" / "Copa del Rey" - in 1929, 1940, 2000 (the year of its Centenary) and 2006 and is the current Copa Catalunya champion. The team has played twice in the UEFA Cup Final - 1988 & 2007 - and lost on both occasions to the dreaded penalty shootouts. 2009: New Stadium / Dani Jarque On August 2nd 2009 and after almost 12 years 'in exile', RCD Espanyol finally moved from the Olympic Stadium into their brand new 40,000 seater stadium and a friendly was played against Liverpool FC, the final result being a 3-0 victory to the Pericos. The celebrations were to surely last for weeks, if not months. But a few days later, Dani Jarque, who had only been appointed captain a few days before the Liverpool game suddenly passed away whilst the team was on tour in Italy. The tour was cancelled and tens of thousands of Pericos gathered at Gate # 21 (Jarque's shirt number) to mourn and pay their respects to their 26 year old captian, a player who had progressed through Espanyol's youth ranks since the age of 14.
If you ever go to a home match at Cornella El Prat you will witness a standing ovation from the public when the clock turns on the 21st minute of the match. Dani may be gone, but he will live on forever in the Pericos' hearts.
